Hip-hop fashion can be traced back in The Bronxareas in New York City where most low-income African-Americans reside. Later on, styles and distinctive elements have been influenced by the scenes in Los Angeles, Detroit, and Philadelphia among other cities where the hip-hop culture originated. Significant changes in hip-hop styles and trends can be due to such sporadic elements. Today, hip-hop fashion is not only prevalent among African-American youth, as it became popularized worldwide by African-American trendsetters in the entertainment scene.

The roots of hiphop fashion are influenced by Africanism and Black Nationalism of the 80s when most hip-hop artists and rappers don themselves with attire, hairstyle and accessories that reflect traditional African themes. Blousy pants, Kemetic ankh designs on kufis, Kente cloth hats, and red, black, and green clothing reminiscent of the flag of Ethiopia were staples until the early 90s.

The mid-90s paved way to gangsta rap which eventually altered the hip-hop fashion to something that would most identify with the current trends. Baseball caps and starter jackets became the emblem of the new era in hip-hop culture and as if to stick with the gangsta attitude, incidents of theft of expensive starter jackets were reported in the media during that time. The gangsta hip-hop fashion is said to be influenced by the styles of West Coast street thugs and prison inmates. It can be recognized in the fashion sense of Chicano gangsters who are frequently seen wearing baggy and dark denim jeans worn low and sagging without a belt, sporting bandannas on the head while having their bodies painted with black ink tattoos. Other cultural analysts would say that the sagging, baggy jeans style is brought about by the realities in urban poor communities wherein clothes have to be passed down from the eldest member of the family to the youngest sibling to cut on clothing budget.

Hip-hop fashion also plays a major role when it comes to the dichotomy between the urban poor African-American and the ghetto fabulous elites of the high street. Gangsta fashion is still the name of the game but for those who can afford double-breasted suits, bowler hats, silks and alligator-skin shoes, the classic gangster fashion of The Godfather fame is more prevalent than the previously mentioned threadbare attire.

Men come later; the first crush of every woman is fashion. I bet you would not find a single woman who does not have infatuation for fashion, except those nerds who are too busy with books and do not get time to catch the latest fashion waves. (I hope my husband does not read this, as he is so obsessed with books as well.) However, not including those nerdish ones, women love fashion as a general rule, and it would be very correct to say that fashion and women are synonymous. It is especially true for teenagers and girls in early twenties.

No wonder why girls are so much obsessed with fashion and styles. There are endless styles and designs in latest fashion that could tempt any girl or woman to go crazy for it. No offense to men here, but even being with a right man does not delight a woman as much as shopping delights her. (My husband would not talk me to for a day if he read this statement.)

In India, latest fashion for girls flies with two different wings. One is time-honored ethnic fashion styles and then the other one and modern one is fashion of western dresses in India. Western dresses, increasingly, have become essence of every feminine wardrobe. Traditional dresses are considered as occasional outfits now, whereas western dresses have become more like a regular style to carry. Jeans, leggings and tights, tops, designer tunics, short dresses and many such western dresses have made a world of difference to Indian women of this modern era. However, the Indian traditional dresses still uphold its esteem high in fashion world, but at the same time, western dresses in India have influentially attained great value and admiration among fashion-obsessed girls.

When it comes to latest fashion for girls, Indian scenario is gradually advancing towards online dais. These days, most of the Indian girls and women prefer to do online shopping instead of wandering around at street and in malls. Moreover, the collection presented online is wider and far greater than the one could ever find at brick and mortar stores. Indian women may not have accepted online shopping for other things, but for fashion, online stores are the prior choice of every fashion forwarded woman as well as girls.

Universities have never been immune to fashion trends. And today is no exception. College campuses are turning into virtual fashion runways. Students trampse around campus sporting the latest in fashion, from Uggs and hoodies (relatively fit for campus wear) to stiletto boots and skin-tight skinny jeans (not so fit for campus life). Trends toward high fashion on campus are surprising as often college students are poor; struggling for income, trying to pay rent for the first time, and having the looming cost of tuition and books. Yet, they some how tend to keep up!

The practicality of student fashion varies depending on the trends. One would think with all of the walking a student has to do around the campus of a university going from class to class that students would dress in relaxed-fit and comfortable clothing. Not the case. You have some women who are turning out college campuses by throwing on heels and enough accessories to make music as they walk. Heeled boots, sandals and pumps are seen year-round despite the harsh weather conditions of some college campuses.

Depending on location and type of school, students may dress more casually, urban, sophisticated or different in some way than the community surrounding the college. General fashion wardrobes differ as much from campus to campus as it would from city to city. Schools seem to have different norms when it comes to fashion. Students could be used to just walking out of the house with jeans and a t-shirt whereas other students may typically get more dressed up just for class.

Of course, a large portion of the student body could probably be caught spending multiple hours in the library with sweatpants, sweatshirts, oversize sweaters or any other cozy outfit. Those students, however, are also often finding trends of their own taste in casual wear. Many popular all-American designers such as American Eagle, Juicy Couture and Hollister are branding their own sweat suits in an effort to create wearable fashion for college students as well. With the democratization of fashion and the increasing accessibility of shopping, students are able to follow the trends when they care to do so.

In recent years men’s fashion has become increasingly popular, and a heightened awareness means that many men are known to be selective when it comes to choosing which clothes to buy, and from which designers to choose from. With many men’s designers tending to have signature looks, this is only helping men to become more distinguished in terms of fashion sense. Sir Paul expanded the Paul Smith empire to include formal menswear and casual lines and in recent years even added fragrances to the brands name. Another British menswear design powerhouse, although a slightly left-field choice, is Vivienne Westwood. Having helped to define the punk era by styling the Sex Pistols, Westwood used chains, safety pins and ripped clothes amongst her designs, adding to her signature look. Her designs are popular with many notable contemporary musicians known for their alternative styles, such as Iggy Pop, Gwen Stefani and Karen O.
